Unmentionables

Here are a few facts or reasonable conjectures that are, for reasons we would like better to understand, all but unmentionable in American mainstream media: ...
—That the best estimate of the cost to the U. S. of the war in Iraq is on the order of one to two trillion dollars.
—That the U.S. is now building four huge permanent military bases in Iraq, as well as a billion-dollar bunker-style embassy.
—That the best estimate of the number of Iraqis who have died as a result of the invasion of Iraq is more than 100,000.
—That the use of depleted uranium weapons is illegal under international law.
—That the U.S. supported and facilitated Saddam Hussein's use of WMDs against Iran in the 1980s in the Iran-Iraq War.
—That German media have reported the U.S. is informing allies it is preparing military strikes against Iran.
—That Iran has the right to enrich uranium as a signatory of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
—That Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad does not make Iranian nuclear policy.
—That the U.S. is responsible for the impasse over Iran's nuclear program, having stymied the EU-3's attempt to offer real incentives to Iran in return for giving up its treaty rights.
—That there is no reason to believe that democratic states in the Middle East would be pro-American or that they would reduce terrorism.
—That a substantial proportion of the U.S. citizenry believes that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should be impeached and removed from office.
—That Dick Cheney is the chief decision-maker in the Bush administration.
—That the president committed a felony under 50 USC Sections 1801-1811 when he used the NSA to spy on Americans without a warrant.
—That the constitutional principle of checks and balances is on the verge of being abandoned definitively in favor of a theory of a "unitary executive."
—That the United States is a militaristic society.
—That the U.S. is living beyond its means, and is financially dependent on countries that do not share its long-term interests.
—That globalization is producing a more and more concentrated distribution of wealth in the U.S. and in the world.
—That the world's oil production is peaking, and that the "American dream" lifestyle will soon no longer be economically sustainable.
—That "our basic norms of decent and ethical conduct seem to have collapsed" (Dr. Alan A. Stone, Harvard Law School, Boston Globe, Dec. 16, 2005).
