RAY McGOVERN BATTERED BY POLICE AS HILLARY CLINTON SPEAKS ABOUT FREEDOM

There was a choice neo-Orwellian moment on Tuesday at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., that speaks volumes about our national life.
Ray McGovern, a friend of ours, was brutalized by police and then arrested for staging a non-disruptive silent protest. His supposed offense: standing silently in a Veterans For Peace T-shirt with his back to the secretary of state as she spoke about "freedom."
Ray McGovern is not just any protester. He is a courtly, estimable 71-year-old gentleman who, after devoting his professional life to the service of this country (he is a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked for 27 years as an analyst for the CIA—in the early 1980s he was in charge of preparing the president's daily security briefing) has continued in retirement to work tirelessly to defend the core American values that the U.S. national security state is systematically subverting.
What was the response of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? She ignored the incident and continued delivering her smug condemnation of governments that arrest protesters and do not allow protest.
Unfortunately for her, CNN filmed the manhandling, which was in itself a crime: an assault without warning whose viciousness provoked McGovern to cry out: "So this is America? Who are you?" (Those assaulting him did not bother to identify themselves before attacking him.)
Later photographs bore witness to his abuse: a dignified gentleman, a summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University, bruised, battered, and bloodied.
UFPPC, which includes a number of Veterans for Peace members, is proud to have co-sponsored a well-attended talk by Ray McGovern in Tacoma, WA, on Nov. 15, 2009, when the staunch defender of the idea that moral values have a role to play in American foreign policy received a standing ovation from a packed auditorium. We are disgusted by his mistreatment, which was redolent of a police state and which went far beyond anything this dedicated activist endured during the George W. Bush administration.
