** A Fundraiser for United for Peace of Pierce County & People for Peace, Justice, and Healing **
In Persia (or Iran) light is a symbol of the presence of the spiritual in the material world. On June 21, the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, we'll gather in the beautiful enclosed rose garden in North Tacoma that once belonged to the Weyerhauser family, with a splendid view of Commencement Bay and Stadium High School.
We'll celebrate poetry that has deeply infused Persian culture and inspired many other cultures, including that of the West. Our celebration, with classical and modern poetry read both in English translation and in the original, will allow ample time for conviviality, music, and refreshment. A fascinating program will include Solh Tours founder Abdi Sami, associate producer for "Life in Iran with Rick Steves."
It's an evening you won't want to miss!
NOTE: Unlike previous versions of this event, Summer Solstice 2010 is a FUNDRAISER for United for Peace of Pierce County (uffpc.org) and People for Peace, Justice, and Healing (tacomapjh.org) to enable these organizations to continue their educational, cultural, and political peace & justice work. Thank you for your support!
All human beings are in truth akin;
All in creation share one origin.
When fate allots a member pangs and pains,
No ease for other members then remains.
If, unperturbed, another's grief canst scan,
Thou are not worthy of the name of man.
