The Pentagon bills the Phraselator as “a complete solution for cross-cultural awareness.”  --  Not.  --  (N.B. This is not a satirical piece.  It appeared word for word as below, with a 2/3-page drawing of the device being used by an American soldier to tell a Middle Eastern man:  "DO NOT ENTER THIS AREA."  -- The caption to the illustration reads:  "Programmed with phrases like 'Put your hands on the wall' in Arabic, the Phraselator allows American soldiers in Iraq to get their message across to the locals.") ...


Maureen Dowd, who in her regular New York Times columns has ramped up her satiric verve considerably in the aftermath of Nov. 2, seems to be aspiring to become a new Mencken, at least with respect to the Bush administration.  --  In this piece she once more levels the formidable cannons of her wit at "Duke Rummy the Domineering," and wonders why it has not occurred to the White House inner circle to extend the privatization of public functions to the sale of advertising on the vast expanses of cloth, metal, and real estate at the command of the Department of Defense.  --  Execution of her proposal would at least make clearer to the troops what it is they're dying for....
