"We nonviolently oppose the reliance on unilateral military actions rather than cooperative diplomacy."
BIG BROTHER IS HERE
August 1, 2013
On Wednesday, July 31, at 8:50 a.m., ten minutes before the Senate Judiciary Committee opened a hearing on domestic spying, the London Guardian published the latest revelations about the National Security Agency, based on documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden.
The Guardian revealed NSA documents describing a secret program called XKeyscore that continuously intercepts the Internet activity of millions of individuals of whom no wrongdoing is suspected—emails, web searches, private chats, everything with an http address. XKeyscore can be used without any prior approval by low-level analysts to access the recent and even "real-time" activity of any individual using the Internet.
Earlier revelations showed that the NSA is collecting records of all domestic phone calls in the United States.
The point of the timing of Wednesday's news seems clear. Not only should all Americans realize that they are now persons of interest when it comes to government surveillance, but they should realize that American leaders have been lying to them about government spying.
As the conviction of whistleblower Bradley Manning this week reminds us, even as the government spies on Americans it has been throwing Espionage Act charges at the whistleblowers who dare to alert their fellow citizens to the government's illegal and unconstitutional activity.
The United States has strayed far from the national ideal of "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" articulated 150 years ago by Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address. We are now only one more national crisis away from a full-fledged Orwellian national security state in which we will be assured, as in Nineteen Eighty-Four, that "War is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength."
