Tacoma will be the site of one of at least 86 demonstrations taking place across the land on the eve of the noxious Citizens United Supreme Court ruling allowing unlimited campaign spending based on the specious doctrines that money is speech and corporations are persons.[1]  --  Add your voice to those calling for a constitutional amendment[2] to overturn this democracy-endangering decision on the afternoon of Fri., Jan. 20, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Fireman's Park and ending with street theater in front of the Federal Courthouse from about 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.[2]  --  This event is part of a NATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST.  --  Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country! ...

WHAT:  Occupy the Courts -- Get the Money Out of Politics!
WHO:  Organized by Move to Amend Olympia with support from Occupy Tacoma; also participating:  Involved Democracy (Enumclaw), People for Peace Justice & Healing, United for Peace of Pierce County, Wash Clean (aka Washington Public Campaigns).  In coordination with Move to Amend
WHEN:  Friday, January 20, 2012 -- events begin at 2:30 p.m. and continue till about 6:30 p.m., with street theater at the Federal Courthouse starting about 5:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
WHERE:  Beginning at Fireman's Park (9th & "A" Sts., Tacoma) and proceeding to the Federal Courthouse (1717 Pacific Ave., Tacoma)

Jan. 20 is the eve of the second anniversary of the devastating Supreme Court Citizens United decision that enables special interests -- including foreign governments -- to sway elections with money.  Articles already abound about how that happened in the recent GOP Iowa caucuses.
 
Don't miss this event! 

The street theater will be powerful; professional stage hands and actors are members of Occupy Tacoma.  Bill Moyer of the Backbone Campaign is sending a beautiful (huge) Bill of Rights to be proudly displayed.  Corporate Robots will be dancing and speaking.  Supreme Court justices will join us.  Special guests will include legislators (4:00 p.m. timeframe) and We The People will speak.  The closing is not to be missed -- "an incredible closing event in lights that will dazzle the human spirit."

* Action will include a procession for imprisoned Ladies Liberty and Justice as well as well as their entombment and resurrection at the courthouse (courthouse arrival is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.).

* Following the courthouse events, which will include music and short speeches, the participants will form a human chain that is candle- or LED-lights-lit, hand-to-hand from the Courthouse to Occupation Park, emphasizing that there MUST be a link between government and "the people."

* Convened by Move to Amend Olympia with support from Occupy Tacoma.  Other groups participating include:  Involved Democracy (Enumclaw); People for Peace Justice & Healing; United for Peace of Pierce County; Wash Clean (a.k.a. Washington Public Campaigns).

* There will be some “pre-function functions” earlier in the week (Tuesday and Thursday) -- teach-in and workshops

* Bring a candle in a jar or a flashlight or other lighted beacon you can set in front of yourself on the sidewalk for the evening human chain linking Courthouse to Occupation Park.

Section 1 [Corporations are not people and can be regulated]

The rights protected by the Constitution of the United States are the rights of natural persons only. 

Artificial entities, such as corporations, limited liability companies, and other entities, established by the laws of any State, the United States, or any foreign state shall have no rights under this Constitution and are subject to regulation by the People, through Federal, State, or local law.

The privileges of artificial entities shall be determined by the People, through Federal, State, or local law, and shall not be construed to be inherent or inalienable.

Section 2 [Money is not speech and can be regulated]

Federal, State and local government shall regulate, limit, or prohibit contributions and expenditures, including a candidate’s own contributions and expenditures, for the purpose of influencing in any way the election of any candidate for public office or any ballot measure.

Federal, State and local government shall require that any permissible contributions and expenditures be publicly disclosed.

The judiciary shall not construe the spending of money to influence elections to be speech under the First Amendment.

Section 3

Nothing contained in this amendment shall be construed to abridge the freedom of the press.
