[Letter sent to Tacoma News Tribune]

June 5, 2009

To the editor:

Obama's speech in Cairo yesterday gives us all hope. There is much to be done to achieve his goals of progress in the Middle East.

Just one area for change is the necessity for Caterpillar, Inc. to cease selling Israel its D9 bulldozers, which is called by Israel Defense "a stragegic weapon here." The two-story high bulldozer has demolished tens of thousands of Palestinian homes, hundreds of thousands of olive trees as well as farmlands and other fruit groves. It has dug up and destroyed electrical, water, and natural gas lines. Most tragically, it has crushed human beings, including a human rights activist from Olympia, Rachel Corrie (who was crushed by a Caterpillar while defending a Gazan home from demolition in March 2003.)

Caterpillar's own Code of Worldwide Business Conduct commits to "accept the responsibilities of global citizenship" and says that it believes its "success should also contribute to the quality of life and the prosperity of communities." Caterpillar's shareholders meet on June 10, 2009, in Peoria, Illinois. The shareholders should support Caterpillar in building the U.S. economy, and eliminate destructive uses in Palestine to bulldoze space for settlements, the wall, and roads for Israelis only.
