At present (8:00 a.m. PDT on Oct. 25, 2005), the upper left-hand corner of the American Friends Service Committee web site gives 1,999 as the number of reported U.S. military deaths in Iraq.  --  (The same number appears on the web site Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.)  --  When this number reaches 2,000 -- probably Tues., Oct. 25, or Wed., Oct. 26 -- a 7:00 p.m. vigil will be held that day if the number is posted before 12:00 noon PDT (or on the following day if it is posted after 12:00 noon) outside First United Methodist Church, 423 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Tacoma, WA.[1]  --  Please plan to come; also, please register for the event at the web link below, where you can also sign up to receive e-mail updates.  --  Participants in this event will be part of a coordinated set of vigils being held around the U.S. to "to say that the country’s pro-peace majority wants Congress to stop the deaths by stopping the dollars that are funding the war," as well as to commemorate the loss of these lives in an unnecessary war and to commemorate the Iraqi lives that have been lost, a number that probably exceeds 100,000.  --  The FUMC Tacoma vigil is listed on AFSC web site as part of the Wage Peace Campaign.[2]  --  As is indicated in the letter from MoveOn posted below, it appears likely that MoveOn is also planning to organize vigils; the FUMC Tacoma vigil will also be listed there, when MoveOn posts this information.[3]  --  Please register for this vigil also, as this will encourage others to come.  --  Thanks to Mike Collier for organizing this; Mike says that antiwar protest signs are acceptable at the vigil....

[From MoveOn]

Dear MoveOn vigil host,

In the past you’ve played an important role by stepping up to host a vigil to remember those killed and advocate an exit from Iraq. It appears likely that next week we will top 2,000 Americans killed in Iraq. Just as we all did on the eve of the war, at 1,000 dead and in August to stand with Cindy Sheehan, MoveOn members will organize vigils across the country when we hit that tragic milestone. As of this morning [Oct. 21] 1,992 American soldiers had died in Iraq. . . .
