TACOMA PEACE ACTIVIST CHOSEN HUMAN RIGHTS CHAMPION BY TACOMA HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

Nominated by the Poet Laureate of the City, the City of Tacoma's Human Rights Commission has awarded the Human Rights Champion Award to peace activist, Tom McCarthy.  Bestowed on individuals and organizations that advance human rights in Tacoma, the award will by presented by the Mayor at City Council Chambers Tacoma Municipal Building, 1st Floor, 747 Market Street, on on Tuesday, October 2, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.

The award letter explained to Mr. McCarthy that:  "You were selected for this honor because of your commitment and dedication to advancing human rights; specifically marches you helped organize advancing peace regarding the Iraq war, the Giant Puppet pageant regarding Lt. Watada's trial, your efforts to protest the 'no-backpack-rule' at rallies, and your efforts to support due process and legal representation for undocumented detainees at the private facility in the Tide Flats.  Your services show a dedication to human rights that is admirable and worthy of recognition."

Tom McCarthy stated, "This award dignifies the civic activity of many residents of Tacoma and Pierce County who act for peace and human rights.  Without their courage the impulse to engage in unjust wars or human rights violations would go unchallenged and unchecked.  Our soldiers and other vulnerable people deserve better than being the fodder of bad policy."
