The roots of the U.S. national security state are much deeper than is commonly realized. Mark Jensen of Pacific Lutheran University will argue that these roots are to be found in an antiradicalism whose definitive conquest of U.S. elites can be located in the early 1920s. With respect to this fundamental shift in American values, the figure of Paul Nitze (1907-2004) can be seen to be both emblematic and historically crucial. A brief discussion will follow the talk.
