DIGGING DEEPER LX: The Tyranny of Oil
In a new book entitled The Tyranny of Oil: The World’s Most Powerful Industry -- And What We Must Do to Stop It (William Morrow, October 7, 2008), Antonia Juhasz exposes an industry that thrives on secrecy: Big Oil. United for Peace of Pierce County’s Monday night book discussion group at the Mandolin Café, Digging Deeper, will spend three weeks discussing The Tyranny of Oil, on Oct. 13, 20, and 27.
The Tyranny of Oil does more than show how the oil industry hides its business dealings from policymakers, legislators, and most of all, consumers, getting what it wants through money, influence, and deception. The book also proposes a clear set of solutions, including Big Oil’s break-up. Drawing on historical research, Juhasz explores the parallels between today's companies and Standard Oil, the most powerful corporation of the early 20th century.
Antonia Juhasz holds a master's in public policy from Georgetown University as well as a degree in public policy from Brown University. An associate fellow at the Institute for Policy Analysis, she is also Ida Tarbell Fellow at Oil Change International and the author of The Bush Agenda (William Morrow, 2006). Antonia Juhasz has served as congressional aide to two members of the United States Congress (John Conyers of Michigan and Elijah Cummings of Maryland) and as the project director of the International Forum on Globalization. She has published in many newspapers, including the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times, and is a frequent television and radio commentator.
UFPPC is pleased to co-sponsor an appearance by the author at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, at King’s Books in Tacoma (218 St. Helens Ave.). Ms. Juhasz will also speak on the campus of Pacific Lutheran Univ. (Philip A. Nordquist Lecture Hall, Xavier 201) on Saturday, October 18, at 7:30 p.m.
