DIGGING DEEPER LVI: Ron Suskind's 'The Way of the World' Print E-mail
Written by UFPPC
Sunday, 07 September 2008

At 7:00 p.m. on Mon., Sept. 8, UFPPC's Monday night book discussion group, Digging Deeper, will discuss Ron Suskind's bestselling book about "how America has lost its way" and "the nation's struggle, day by day, to reclaim the moral authority upon which its survival depends."[1]  --  The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism was published in August, and earned a spate of news coverage because it purports to reveal (on pages 369-73) evidence of an illegal act that could constitute an impeachable offense committed by members of the Bush administration: the fabrication of document at the end of 2003 showing a connection between Saddam Hussein's government and the Mohammed Atta, the 9/11 hijacker.  --  Digging Deeper meets Mondays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Mandolin Café (3923 S. 12th St., Tacoma)....

DIGGING DEEPER LVI: RON SUSKIND'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD

For several weeks, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist-turned-author Ron Suskind's new book has been high on the nation's bestseller lists. The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism (Harper/HarperCollins, August 2008), follows the lives of a number of characters both famous and obscure in novelistic vignettes from the summer of 2006 into the present year.

Suskind's running commentary on the struggle of his characters to address fundamental moral, social, political, and religious issues makes of his book an extended meditation on what he calls, variously, "moral energy," "moral power," or "moral authority," and challenges America's post-9/11 embrace of what he calls "the will to power."

Since July 2004, United for Peace of Pierce County has been conducting “Digging Deeper,” a Monday-evening book discussion group, often in the form of a study circle. Topics have included peak oil, climate change, the corporation, torture, Iran, U.S.-Iran relations, the writings of Robert Baer, Islam, American immigration policy, Barack Obama and the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Saul Alinsky’s life and writings, war and human nature, parallels between the U.S. and ancient Rome, the sustainability revolution, the debt crisis, 9/11, and energy geopolitics, as well as abiding themes of war, peace, politics, and social change.  Occasionally, the group has spent several weeks reading longer works, like Daniel Yergin’s The Prize or Robert Fisk’s The Great War for Civilisation.

DIGGING DEEPER meets every Monday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Mandolin Café, 3923 S. 12th St., Tacoma, WA.

Participation is free.  No more copies of this book are available for purchase or loan at this time; try King's Books (218 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma) or other local bookstores. Info: contact Mark Jensen (jensenmk@plu.edu)
