DIGGING DEEPER LII: DAVID RAY GRIFFIN'S CHALLENGE TO 9/11 ORTHODOXY

One of the leading voices challenging the official consensus on what happened on September 11, 2001, has been that of a 69-year-old retired professor of religion and theology. David Ray Griffin has now devoted five books totalling 1,536 pages to challenging what he calls "the public story about 9/11" and arguing that it is "riddled with internal contradictions" (9/11 Contradictions, pp. vi, 275). UFPPC's Monday evening book discussion group will spend two weeks examining Griffin’s two most recent volumes:

—David Ray Griffin, 9/11 Contradictions: An Open Letter to Congress and the Press (Northampton, MA: Olive Branch Press, 2008).  "Griffin (The New Pearl Harbor, 2004), a 9/11 truth advocate, continues to explore the internal inconsistencies in the official version of the events of September 11 . . . Readers will be surprised by Griffin's finding that conclusive evidence is still pending; U.S. officials submit that bin Laden's prior orchestration of attacks is proof enough, but today bin Laden is on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list for directing several terrorist attacks — but not for 9/11.  Although readers might be wont to dismiss this book as pure conspiracy theory, it succeeds as a searing and close reading of the events of September 11."  —Publishers Weekly.

Since July 2004, United for Peace of Pierce County has been conducting “Digging Deeper,” a Monday-evening book discussion group, often in the form of a study circle. Topics have included peak oil, climate change, the corporation, torture, Iran, U.S.-Iran relations, the writings of Robert Baer, Islam, American immigration policy, Barack Obama and the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Saul Alinsky’s life and writings, war and human nature, parallels between the U.S. and ancient Rome, the sustainability revolution, and the debt crisis, as well as abiding themes of war, peace, politics, and social change. Occasionally, the group has spent several weeks reading longer works, like Daniel Yergin’s The Prize or Robert Fisk’s The Great War for Civilisation.

DIGGING DEEPER meets every Monday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Mandolin Café, 3923 S. 12th St., Tacoma, WA.
