WHAT: How Peace in Northern Ireland Can Give Us Hope WHO: Conor Browne, Queen's University Belfast WHEN: Thursday, June 26, 2008 -- 7:00 p.m. WHERE: King's Books, 218 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma Conor Browne will be in Tacoma at King’s Books on Thursday evening, June 26, to talk about how the peace in Northern Ireland can give us hope for peace in other long-term conflicts that seem hopeless. Conor Browne is a Ph.D. researcher at Queen’s University Belfast and has lived in Northern Ireland all his life. He was born six months before Bloody Sunday (Jan. 30, 1972, when twenty-six protesters were shot -- thirteen died immediately, another four months later -- by British soldiers during a march in Derry). Browne has witnessed firsthand the transition of his country from the violent sectarian conflict of The Troubles to a peaceful, prosperous society. He holds advanced degrees in philosophy, applied ethics and security studies. He is currently researching methods to enhance the effectiveness of current counter-bioterrorism strategies and is the co-author of the forthcoming book Peacekeeping in a Disordered, Globalised World.
