DIGGING DEEPER XLVI: HOWARD ZINN For a generation, the books of historian Howard Zinn have contested the sharp turn to the right in the U.S. effected by the so-called Reagan Revolution. His magnum opus, entitled A People’s History of the United States, was first published in 1980 and is now widely regarded as a classic work. Three dozen other titles and countless articles and prefaces have made Howard Zinn one of the most important contrarian voices on the American intellectual landscape.

On April 21 & 28, we’ll examine Zinn’s 1994 autobiography, published when he was 72, and his most recent collection of essays.

—Howard Zinn, A Power Governments Cannot Suppress (City Lights, 2006; hardcover 2007). "[A]lmost three dozen brief, passionate essays that follow in the tradition of his landmark work, A People's History of the United States, taking up the cause of ordinary Americans fighting for social justice. Shunning conventional notions of American history, Zinn instead strives to decouple the country's history from its 'mythology,' in part by examining familiar contemporary concerns like class, race, civil liberties, immigration, and the Iraq War."  —Publishers Weekly.

—Howard Zinn, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train: A Personal History of Our Times (Beacon, 1994; paperback 1995; new ed. 2007). "Noted left-wing historian Zinn (A People's History of the United States) believes that activism and education are inextricable, and his memoir illuminates a well-engaged life."  —Publishers Weekly.

Since July 2004, United for Peace of Pierce County has been conducting “Digging Deeper,” a Monday-evening book discussion group, often in the form of a study circle. Topics have included peak oil, climate change, the corporation, torture, Iran, U.S.-Iran relations, the writings of Robert Baer, Islam, American immigration policy, Barack Obama and the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Saul Alinsky’s life and writings, war and human nature, parallels between the U.S. and ancient Rome, and the sustainability revolution, as well as abiding themes of war, peace, politics, and social change. Occasionally, the group has spent several weeks reading longer works, like Daniel Yergin’s The Prize or Robert Fisk’s The Great War for Civilisation.

DIGGING DEEPER meets every Monday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Mandolin Café, 3923 S. 12th St., Tacoma, WA.

Participation is free. Some copies of the books are available for purchase or loan. Info: contact Mark Jensen (jensenmk@plu.edu; 253-535-7219).
