United for Peace of Pierce County will hold its first meeting of the New Year at 7:00 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 7, 2007.  --  With a new Democratic Congress and an awakening citizenry on a collision course with an administration intent on escalating the Iraq war, January and February promise to be historic months in the ongoing effort to end U.S. involvement in Iraq.  --  It's up to us to translate this into heightened attention and energy focused on important events that will be occuring in Pierce County.  --  Two events stand out:  the court-martial of Lt. Ehren Watada at Fort Lewis (pre-trial hearing Jan. 4, court-martial Feb. 5) and the Citizens' Hearing on the Legality of U.S. Actions in Iraq in Tacoma (Jan. 20-21, with Daniel Ellsberg giving a major address on the evening of Jan. 19).  --  And don't forget to make plans to attend the Benefit Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 6, at the Antique Sandwich Company (5102 No. Pearl St., Tacoma, WA 98407, 253-752-4069) to raise funds for the Citizens' Hearing — featuring Steve and Kristi Nebel with Joe Debenedictis on piano and vocals, and special performances from Gerry Sperry, Tom McCarthy, Dave Dittemore, and Marc Bordelon.  --  The agenda of Thursday's UFPPC meeting, prepared by Steve Nebel, is posted below.[1] ...
