With governments in Israel and the United States insisting that Gaza and Iraq are no longer occupied, the body of international law about occupation faces a challenge of definition, relevance and authority. To commemorate International Human Rights Day, Dr. Stephen Zunes will discuss international law on military occupation as it applies to various occupations around the world, including Palestine, Iraq, Cyprus, Tibet, and others. This second Forum on International Human Rights Law is a part of a series dedicated to the promise of international law as the fundamental basis for the establishment and maintenance of peace and justice throughout the world.
Dr. Zunes is a Professor of Politics and chair of the Peace & Justice Studies Program at the University of San Francisco. He has made frequent visits to the Middle East, where he has met with top government officials, academics, journalists and opposition leaders. He serves as a senior policy analyst and Middle East editor for the Foreign Policy in Focus Project and as an associate editor of Peace Review. Professor Zunes writes often on Middle Eastern politics, U.S. foreign policy, international terrorism, social movements, and human rights.
