LETTER: ‘Address terror's root causes, defend democratic institutions, end occupation of Iraq’ Print E-mail
Written by Carl A. Anderson
Saturday, 09 July 2005

On Saturday the News Tribune (Tacoma, WA) carried a letter on the July 7 London bombings from Carl Anderson, who presided over the meeting that led to the founding of United for Peace of Pierce County, on Nov. 14, 2002.  --  Refuting silly notions advanced on Fox News and MSNBC, Anderson writes: “We need to start doing things differently. We need to address the root causes of terror abroad and defend our democratic institutions here at home. Above all, we need to end the military occupation of Iraq.” ...

Like all of us I was stunned by the news of the London bombings. I spent a part of the day seeing if friends and loved ones in the London area were safe. Thank goodness they were. Later, I watched coverage of the bombings on the various cable news stations.

I was amazed at the “commentary” I heard on Fox News and MSNBC. They put forward the notions that Guantanamo and global warming were now “non-issues,” that renewing the Patriot Act was a “slam dunk.” And once again they tried to connect the war in Iraq with the terrorist bombings.

I would suggest the opposite. The war, Guantanamo, and assaults on civil liberties have made the world a more dangerous place.

We need to start doing things differently. We need to address the root causes of terror abroad and defend our democratic institutions here at home. Above all, we need to end the military occupation of Iraq.
