WAYS TO PLUG INTO THE MOVEMENT

Art of Resistance
April 2005

http://riseup.net/artofresistance/getenvoloved.html

We are an all volunteer event and could use your energy and commitment! If you can help with anything from organizing volunteers to producing events and posters and organizing art shows, please join the listserv and come to our organizing meetings. We appreciate help over the next months, as well as short term help to set up and staff the conference.

New meeting time 6:30 Sundays at New location Action NW at 1115 E. Pike St. (just up the street from Cafe Vita on Capitol Hill

Other ways to be part of Art of Resistance:

Propose a workshop for the weekend of the conference.

We are looking for workshops on political drama, dance, poetry, hip-hop, history -- what's your expertise? You can find a workshop application by clicking here. The deadline for proposals is Apr. 16, 2005.

Make a piece of visual art for the open art show.

All work is welcome. Bring us your fabulous political art for our open show during the weekend of the conference! Art must be ready to hang, please include hardware. Thumbtacking to the wall is fine. If you have mailable art such as prints that you don't need returned to you, please send them to:

8017 Stroud Ave. N.
Seattle, WA 98103

Other work should be walked in to the conference site on the Friday of the event and taken with you at the end of the weekend. Feel free to list a price for your work. We will do our best to connect people who want to buy your work with you during the weekend, but will not be facilitating a formal sales routine. Be part of the inspiration, get into your studio and get to work! Watch for the date and time of the show -- check our website. All politically oriented work is welcome, no racist, sexist, or homophobic themes.

In the next few months we will be doing PR and fundraising for this all volunteer organized conference by putting community events and a weekly booth at the Fremont Sunday Market. If you have any posters, patches or other political art items you could create and donate to us, we will use them to inform, inspire and raise money by donation for the conference. Come and join us at the Sunday Market and let everyone know that art can't be silenced.

For more information about delivering work and picking it up, e-mail us at artofresistance@riseup.net with the subject line "Art Show." Please include your information.

Mail art in to the Mail Art Show!

One of the highlights of last year's event was the mail art we received from all over the world. Create a mailable piece of political art, post card size is around 4" x 6", and send it to:

P.O. Box 20307
Seattle, WA 98102

The CD Project:

Songs of Resistance: There is an open call to all music composers for a project called "Songs of Resistance." Open to any writers. Send in a wav file or mp3 file of your song and permission to use it. There will be a form posted on the website. You retain the full rights to your song. By sending it in you are giving us permission to post the song for people to download for free on our website. You can also include a link to your website for people who are interested in getting more information or buying your music. There may be a CD project as a fundraiser depending on the response we get from the open call.

Submissions should be sent to artofresistance@riseup.net with the subject line "CD Project." Please include your information.

Political Comic Book and Zine Project:

We would like to put together a comic book of political work, and include your zines in this year's conference. (All copy left or copy riot) If you have something you'd like to contribute, send it to: artofresistance@riseup.net with the subject line "Comic Book/Zine Project." Please include your information.

ART HAS A GREAT CAPACITY FOR TRANSFORMING THE WORLD

Art of Resistance
April 2005

http://riseup.net/artofresistance/about.html

We believe that the arts have the power to express ideas with unique precision and impact. As artists, we are dedicated to using that strength to support and encourage positive change in our world.

Art of Resistance: a political artists conference, will converge in Seattle again this May. Related events in Minneapolis and Mexico City are also planned by dedicated artists in those areas, inspired by the ideas and energy generated at last year’s weekend event in Seattle.

As artists and activists, we want to draw other like-minded people together to explore how we can learn from, engage with and support each other’s efforts to use art bring art into the struggle to confront injustice, disarm prejudice and speak truth to and about power. At the conference, this will involve:

--Discussions about history and theory -- learning and drawing inspiration from political art created in the past, and engaging in the current discourse of community arts.

--Skill-based workshops and demonstrations -- strengthening and broadening our skills and learning new techniques from each other.

--Time to talk and reflect -- deepening our ideas and networks so that we can collaborate more effectively, meet new people, think new thoughts.

Join us! Whether your concern is with the environmental crisis, the growth of our own government’s aggression, poverty or other events, whether you’ve been working for one year or fifty, we welcome your art and your experience. What can we get started in a weekend? Join us and start to live the change!
