HOLY MOSES

In June 1973, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir attended a state dinner honoring West German Chancellor Willy Brandt.  "Let me tell you something that we Israelis have against Moses," she declared.  "He took us forty years through the desert -- in order to bring us to the one spot in the Middle East that has no oil!"

Meir, Golda (1898-1978) Russian-born Israeli stateswoman, founding member of the Israeli Workers' Party, secretary general (1966-68), prime minister of Israel (1969-1974)

[NOTE: U.S. petroleum geologist Kenneth S. Deffeyes offers a different, unsourced version of this quotation in Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage (Princeton University Press, 2001), p. 124: "Don't talk to me about Moses. He spent 40 years leading us to the one place in the Middle East that doesn't have any oil." --J.K.]
