CALENDAR: Ehren Watada to appear in Tacoma -- Tues., Dec. 5 @ 7pm Print E-mail

Lt. Ehren Watada, the first commissioned officer of the U.S. Army to publicly refuse to go to Iraq and to campaign for an end to the war, faces a court-martial set to begin on Feb. 5, 2007.  --  He will discuss his case at King’s Books in Tacoma, on Tues., Dec. 5, 2006, at 7:00 p.m., at an event co-sponsored by UFPPC.[1]  --  Lt. Watada will talk about his personal history and reasons for his refusal to deploy to Iraq, as well as about his contention that the war in Iraq is illegal under both American and international law.  --  Please make a special effort to attend this unusual opportunity to hear firsthand from Lt. Watada about his underreported case.  --  NOTE: Ehren Watada was recently nominated for Time magazine’s Person of the Year 2006....

In the aftermath of Democratic Party victories in the 2006 midterm elections, UFPPC's book discussion group 'Digging Deeper' will discuss the rise to prominence and political prospects of Sen. Barack Obama in the context of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.[1]  --  On the last two Monday evenings in November and the first Monday evening in December, the group will examine The Audacity of Hope, Obama’s just-released bestseller, and his 1995 autobiography Dreams from My Father, as well as two other books:  At Canaan’s Edge, the recently published concluding third volume of Taylor Branch’s monumental biography of Martin Luther King Jr., and Clayborne Carson’s edition of The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.  --  Participation is free.  Some volumes are available for purchase or borrowing.  --  Digging Deeper meets Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the Mandolin Café (3923 S. 12th St., Tacoma, WA)....

First Thursdays are film night at United for Peace of Pierce County.  --  At 6:30 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 5, at First Congregational Church (209 S. "J" St.), UFPPC will screen "The Ground Truth" (2006).[1]  --  "The Ground Truth" is a recent documentary film on "patriotic young Americans — ordinary men and women who heeded the call for military service in Iraq — as they experience recruitment and training, combat, homecoming, and the struggle to reintegrate with families and communities" (film web site).[2]  --  USA Today called the film "undeniably one of the year's most compelling films," and commented:  "Unflinching, disturbing and fascinating, 'The Ground Truth' never weighs in on the merits of the war, nor engages in Bush-bashing.  This is how these soldiers feel and there is no denying their sense of outrage."[3]  --  The film's title comes from a term used in aerial photography for what is discovered when a photographed location is actually visited and examined....

On Thurs., Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m., at First Congregational Church in Tacoma (209 S. "J" St., near Wright Park), UFPPC will screen "Sir! No Sir!: The Suppressed Story of the GI Movement to End the War in Vietnam."[1]  --  "Sir! No Sir!" won the the audience award at the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Golden Starfish Award for best documentary in 2005.  --  The film has earned generally positive reviews and currently enjoys a very positive 89 rating on the Rotten Tomatoes web site.  --  All are welcome; no charge for admission; UFPPC's regular meeting will follow a brief discussion of the film.  --  Producer/director David Zeiger's synopsis of the film follows the announcement.[2] ...
