Marc Cooper poses in the April 2005 Atlantic Monthly as a sage commentator in touch with real, effective politics, as opposed to those latte liberals who only talk to themselves. -- From that supposed point of view, all this talk on the left about George Lakoff's ideas on framing seems like posturing and denial. -- But Cooper's own denials about the realities facing contemporary America are revealed the fact that in this long review he never mentions the words "oil," "petroleum," "energy," "Middle East," or "military," -- much less militarism. -- No doubt it's true that Lakoff doesn't have all the answers. -- But Marc Cooper has so many delusions of his own it ill behooves him to be so severe about the delusions of others....

Emmanuel Todd, a French demographer who successfully predicted the collapse of the Soviet empire in 1976, has written a popular book predicting the collapse of the American empire, recently translated into English. -- Todd wonders whether the U.S. "return to its true self -- democratic, liberal, and productive" while doing "a minimum of damage to our working class" and to the rest of the world. -- As the French say, Qui vivra verra ('Those who live will see')....
